Opinions of the value of a business can extend from a chat amongst friends, colleagues or advisers through to a detailed investigation and analysis of the business’ physical nature, financial records, market evidence and the application of widely recognised and applied techniques.
At one end, the costs are very likely to be little or none at all, while at the other, costs need to reflect the time, knowledge and the application of skills that are required from a recognised, experienced practitioner in doing the work.
Business valuations are opinions you make decisions on. The more important possible financial and personal impact of the decisions you are about to make, the higher quality of the work you need to have done for you in my view.
Generally, in my view, the quality and reliability of valuation reports descends in this order.
- Detailed or Comprehensive Reports.
- Limited Scope or Summary or Estimate Reports.
- Calculation Reports (really only suited for use by industry professionals).
- Appraisal Reports.
- Online Reports.
And the costs of the work reflect the extent of the investigations and analysis necessary to deliver each type of report.
